About Shelf & Signal

What Shelf & Signal covers, how each article is written and sourced, and why this magazine reads online retail in the third person.

Shelf & Signal is an independent magazine about online retail and digital commerce. It explains how the pandemic of 2020 moved a large part of shopping onto the internet, which of those changes lasted, and how a modern online shop actually works: the shopper, the checkout, the platform and the parcel.

What the magazine covers

Four sections run through the site. The Pandemic Shift reads the 2020 and 2021 timeline and the category data that was published at the time. Consumer Behaviour looks at baskets, trust, returns and the way phones and social platforms changed discovery. Payments and Checkout deals with wallets, QR codes, instalments and cross-border money. Platforms and Fulfilment compares marketplaces with own stores and follows the order to the door.

How the articles are written

Every article answers one question and names its source. Where a figure comes from a study, the study is named and its limits are stated. Where a claim is a judgement rather than a measurement, it is written as a judgement. The magazine reads its subject in the third person: companies, platforms and institutions are described as they are, never as "we", and the site belongs to none of them.

No content is copied from another site, and no person, quotation or statistic is invented. The editorial team writes in English and corrects errors quickly when they are reported.

Who it is for

Shelf & Signal is written for people who run or study online shops: small and mid-sized merchants, ecommerce and marketing managers, analysts, and students. The tone is practical. The aim is that a reader finishes an article knowing what to check next, not simply that a topic exists.

Independence

The magazine sells nothing and accepts no payment for coverage. Links to external sources are given because they are useful to the reader, not as advertising. If a page ever carries a commercial link, it will be marked as such.
